Not Banksy

March 24th, 2009 No comments

It seems that NotBanksy (a Banksy imitator) is up to something.

The Londonist reports the following from a Reader names sammo

“I’m not sure if this would interest you at all, but I found what looks like it could be a Banksy canvas or at least a piss take Banksy canvas in Holloway today. It was carefully wrapped in cellophane and didn’t seem like the sort of thing someone would lose, at least I hope not otherwise I’ve got stolen property! Anyway, it seems to be numbered out of 100. I haven’t read anything else anywhere about any Banksy giveaways so thought I’d drop you a line if it’s newsworthy?”

If you want to find out whats going on you should check out the original Londonist article.

The now banksy Vandalised

March 24th, 2009 No comments

The now widely reported and well known “Last Graffiti Before Motorway” piece of vandalised the weekend, and photos of the vandal in act were published on the Daily Mail website.

It seems that a number of people are out to remind Banksy of the real meaning of graffiti due to his success the Daily Mail speculates… or maybe they’re just jealous?

Banksy makes Rolling Stone’s 100 Agents of Change

March 20th, 2009 No comments

Rolling Stone magazine have released their list of the top 100 movers and shakers agents of change (movers n shakers). Banksy himself made the list this year at number 72.

From Rolling Stone;

WHAT HE’S CHANGING: Combining graffiti art with a culture-jamming sensibility — painting a hole on a West Bank security wall, illicitly hanging a “Mona Lisa” with a smiley face in the Louvre — the man who is reportedly named Robin or Robert Banks has made art dangerous again. He remains stubbornly anonymous despite his infamy.

FRIENDS SAY: “The streets are boring,” artist Damien Hirst has said. “So anyone like Banksy who makes them entertaining and treats people like people instead of consumers is brilliant.”

KEY QUOTE: “You know what hip-hop has done with the word ‘nigger’? I’m trying to do that with the word ‘vandalism’: bring it back.”

Banksy Thieves Thwarted

March 20th, 2009 No comments

Despite economic turndown causing art sales to drop, and Banksy pieces off Kate Moss failing to sell it just doesn’t stop some.

A gang has been stopped trying to steal a piece on a WALL in Hackney wick which was created by Banksy.

The gang used sophisticated industrial cutting equipment to try and steal the derelict wall which is known for being one of the first pieces credited to the now informous graffiti artist Banksy.

The threatened Hackney Wick image shows a baby with scattered building blocks and the slogan, “Kill People”, and is located in White Post Lane, near Hackney Wick railway station.

Credit to the Hackney Gazette.

Banksy copycat in Bradford on Avon

March 20th, 2009 No comments

A Banksy copycat piece has been spotted by fans in Bradford on Avon. The piece of work, of a man in a cap with his hands on his head has appeared on the front of the Viaduct Inn on Brassknocker Hill near the Limpley Stoke viaduct. The Viaduct Inn is a derelict pub.

The work was originally spotted by a 16 year old Banksy Fan Tom Williams from Winsley the Wiltshire Times is reporting. Tom has even been lucky enough to bag a stencil which was left nearby and is believed to have been used to create the piece. Tom is quoted as having saying;

“Banksy is known for his very bizarre ideas. I have always liked the kind of graffiti that instead of making a place look bad, it makes it look good.

“It’s about doing what he wants to do rather then listening to anyone else. It’s really artistic.

“If he hadn’t have started out the way he did, with a poor upbringing, then I think he would have become a very successful legal artist.”

If anyone in the area has a picture or anyone spots one on Flickr etc please get in touch!
